YouTuber Gus Johnson has noticed something odd about Subway's jalapeños

TwitterFacebook

When YouTuber Gus Johnson found one too many jalapeño stems on his Subway sandwich, he decided to see if a pattern existed in the popular sub chain's jalapeño quality.

In video uploaded Wednesday, Johnson briefs viewers with some background to his problem.

"I've been noticing for quite some time now, that it seems like every time I get some jalapeños on my flippin' Subway sandwich, I'm biting into a big ol' hard stem," Johnson says. The time had come to investigate.

Johnson allegedly went to four Subway locations, bought a total of 20 sandwiches (all with jalapeños, of course), and recorded how many subs had jalapeño stems on them, as well as how many stems were on each sandwich. Read more...

Here are all the products Amazon announced at its hardware event

TwitterFacebook

Amazon hosted its annual hardware event on Sept. 25, where the company announced the introduction of a slew of new products. Dave Limp, senior vice president of devices, opened up the event with a talk on privacy before jumping into why everyone was really there.

You can now say “Alexa, tell me what you heard,” and the smart assistant will read you back your last voice command. Coming later, you’ll be able to ask, “Alexa, why did you do that?” for cases in which Alexa does something you don’t understand.

In addition to some privacy updates, Alexa is getting some fun new upgrades. Later this year there will be a Samuel L. Jackson voice option, for when you want a change of pace in how the smart assistant speaks to you. Read more...

These are all the Echo speakers Amazon showed off at its big event

TwitterFacebook

Amazon showed off several new Echo speakers at its hardware event on Wednesday, including what is basically a talking nightlight

First and foremost is the basic Amazon Echo. Amazon refreshed its flagship smart speaker with better audio quality and new fabric on the exterior, but other than that, it's still the $99.99 Echo you know and love (or hate).

On the more interesting side of the Echo spectrum is the Echo Flex. The $24.99 box plugs directly into a wall outlet and has a small speaker on it so Alexa can talk back to you. Amazon is positioning this as something you might want to use to supplement other smart devices, which can be commanded via Echo Flex. Read more...

'Gears 5' was ahead of schedule. So The Coalition rewrote the rules.

TwitterFacebook

The entire Gears 5 story mode was playable by the end of 2018, albeit in rough form. That was almost a full year before it eventually launched on Sept. 6, 2019.

That's definitely not common in game development, and it's even less so when you're talking about a blockbuster franchise like Gears. There's a growing understanding among the people who play games that development is a tricky process, and that a lot of the time, major productions come together just under the wire.

So Gears 5 was almost a full year ahead of the curve. It wasn't the polished gem back in 2018 that it is now. But before Christmas of that year, The Coalition had built something sturdy enough that people could take it home over the holiday break and play it from start to finish. Read more...

Nintendo's Switch Lite is exactly what it needs to be

TwitterFacebook

There's really no mystery or surprise with the Switch Lite.

Nintendo promised a smaller and exclusively portable version of its hit gaming machine, and that's exactly what it has delivered. The Lite doesn't do anything its bigger sibling doesn't, but it gives Nintendo fans a cheaper and in some ways more welcoming hardware alternative.

Let's start with some basic stats. The Switch Lite can't output to a TV and is roughly 33 percent smaller and slightly lighter than a standard Switch. The size difference doesn't amount to much on the battery life side of things. Nintendo says the big Switch maxes out at 6.5 hours while the Switch Lite maxes out at 7 hours.  Read more...

Amazon's Alexa assistant will offer directions, other help in new GM cars

TwitterFacebook

If you're still waiting for the Amazon Echo Auto device to bring Alexa into your car, new General Motors vehicles will deliver the digital assistant directly to your drive.

Starting next year, Alexa will be built into infotainment systems for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac drivers with 2018 and newer models. (Since newer GM systems are updatable, they will be compatible with the new Alexa integration.)

Instead of using the Echo Auto device, which has slowly rolled out for $49.99 throughout the year, drivers and passengers can wake up Alexa within the car's center console. From within the car you can ask Alexa for directions to an address or a more vague "coffee shop." This will bring up navigation tools in the car, like maps or audio directions. Read more...

Amazon wants you to wear Alexa on your face with Echo Frames

TwitterFacebook

Amazon already has an Alexa-enabled product for just about every room in your house. Now the company wants to put Alexa on an entirely new surface: your face.

The retailer just announced Echo Frames, eyeglasses that come with Alexa built-in. While the new glasses will undoubtedly bring up comparisons to Google Glass, Amazon's new eyeglasses don't have cameras or a display. Instead, the glasses are meant to make Alexa accessible at all times throughout the day.

The glasses have a microphone and small speaker built in, so you can ask Alexa questions or use commands to set reminders. The speaker is meant to beam sound towards the wearer's ears so they can hear it but people nearby won't (the idea is somewhat similar to Bose Frames sunglasses).  Read more...

Echo Buds are Amazon's answer to AirPods

TwitterFacebook

Amazon's long-rumored competitor to Apple's AirPods are real, and they're called Echo Buds, the company confirmed at its annual hardware event on Wednesday.

As you might expect, they're somewhat basic and unassuming wireless earbuds that offer hands-free Alexa access. Amazon's announcement emphasized sound quality, claiming each bud has two armature drivers inside to deliver clear audio.

Now for the bad news: They're $129.99. That contradicts previous reports that suggested Amazon would skew toward a cheaper price pointCNBC said they could cost less than $100 and would have significant fitness-tracking features. Read more...
