The solidly blue district is likely to elect Omar to replace Keith Ellison.
Minnesota’s Fifth District, which includes all of Minneapolis, hasn’t sent a Republican to Congress since 1962. The seat opened up this year when Rep. Keith Ellison stepped down to run for Minnesota attorney general, and now Democrat Ilhan Omar and Republican Jennifer Zielinski are competing to fill it.
Omar — a 36-year-old Somali refugee who immigrated to the United States when she was 12 — is running on a deeply progressive platform, supporting Medicare-for-all, tuition-free college, and criminal justice reform. And given this district’s solidly blue history, she’s likely to win. Her potential victory would be historic: Along with Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib, who is running unopposed, she would become one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress.
Zielinski, on the other hand, is running a lower-profile conservative campaign that includes support for the Republican tax plan, strict enforcement of immigration law, and a robust US-Israel alliance. She opposes Ellison’s run for attorney general.
