Samsung's next smartwatch will probably arrive with the Galaxy Note 10

Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 won't be arriving by its lonesome self.

In addition to the new stylus-equipped Android smartphone, Samsung will likely also announce a new smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch Active 2, at its Unpacked event on Aug. 7.

Images and details of the unreleased Galaxy Watch Active 2 were published by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and uncovered by Droid Life.

Like the first-generation Galaxy Watch Active, the second-gen version will sport a round display with Samsung's signature Tizen OS designed for circular displays.

I adore cheese, despite knowing the havoc it wreaks on my body. 

Like 65 percent of the human population, I've been cursed with lactose intolerance. And like an undetermined, but probably equally high percentage of the human population, I've also been cursed with an inability to turn down dairy products. While the concept of drinking a glass of straight milk still horrifies me, cheese is something I can't seem to cut out of my life. 

If I'm free for the four to six hours after a meal, I'll gladly indulge in cheesy dishes I have no business consuming: tangy lemon ricotta pancakes, pizza topped with basil and fresh mozzarella, decadent mac and cheese baked with a breadcrumb and cheese crust. But my greatest vice is eating cheese on its own. Even though I know it'll kick off a sequence of events that inevitably end in Pompeii-levels of destruction, I'll gladly hit up the cheese section at my local grocery store and stock up on blocks of creamy, salty heaven.  Read more...

My failed attempt to find a roommate on Facebook

In a shocking turn of events, something about Facebook isn't especially good.

Alright, that's probably a little harsh. You see, my two roommates both decided to move on at the end of July, and I needed to replace them. I was able to fill one room with a friend of mine, but I still needed someone for the other. I figured I would primarily (but not solely) use Facebook to find candidates.

After all, I'd used it when I was hunting for apartments myself, and had no real complaints about the process. Plenty of my friends have used it as both apartment and roommate hunters, too. And what Team Coco learned was that just because you stick a Godzilla costume on a beagle, doesn't mean it's going to get right into character and start smashing up the tiny city you built for exactly that purpose.

Jon Stewart celebrates passage of 9/11 compensation bill: 'The honor of my life'

Jon Stewart was all smiles before the Senate vote to extend the 9/11 victims and first responders fund — but after it passed, he was sober, gracious and proud.

"It has been the honor of my life to work with the men and women behind me," he said, fronting media alongside his fellow campaigners, first responders, survivors, and lawmakers.

The Senate voted 97-2 to extend funding for the bill until 2092, providing financial support and compensation for people continuing to suffer from health conditions stemming from the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, as well as their families.

The softblocking meme blends literary references with cancel culture

Oof. Yikes. A new copypasta has everyone softblocking problematic villains from well known stories, all in the name of the meme. 

Urban Dictionary defines softblocking as "A phrase often used by Twitter users to describe the blocking of another person, then immediate unblock." 

Essentially, it forces the blocked party to unknowingly unfollow the user so they stop interacting with the user's tweets. 

It's a passive-aggressive — but drama-skirting — way to get someone out of your social sphere. When Twitter users find out that someone has been problematic — whether it's a terrible take they had on a marginalized group or allegations of sexual harassment — they'll softblock the person to gently remove them from their online social lives.  Read more...

So we all know FaceApp is sketchy. But uniquely sketchy? Not so fast. 

Years after its rocky and arguably racist start, FaceApp once again jumped to viral fame this month before users pointed out the selfie-filter app had a questionable privacy policy. People were shocked (shocked!) that the app, among other unsettling practices, gathered location data.

Hi HNers, I've built a lot of software in Python and Ruby over the years and recently, I've become interested in Lisp but am unsure which Lisp/Scheme variant to learn for building production grade software. Ideally, I would like to learn the most modern one i.e. robust package management, tooling, ecosystem, etc. Really the main requirement is that I would like to be able to build production ready software with a Lisp that I can use at and for my company. I've looked into Clojure and like a lot about it, but don't want to have to dig into the Java world. Is there any alternative out there? Any suggestions are appreciated :)
