Netflix's 'Immigration Nation' damns the system by telling the truth
Six hours of a stranger’s time is a big ask, especially if you’re vouching for a show you haven’t seen yet. But leading up to the August 3 release of Netflix’s Immigration Nation, plenty of people ventured out on that limb to promote the series on social media. This came after one of its main subjects, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sought to block the project's release and threatened legal action against its creators. Now, it’s all too clear what the agency took issue with — and the series' amplification has become even more important.
Directed by Christina Clusiau and Shaul Schwartz, the six-part docuseries began production shortly after the Trump administration took office and, for a time, had the rare support of ICE and other administration officials. Unlike other impactful documentaries released in recent years, Immigration Nation didn't purport a specific agenda during production; even its title is ambiguous enough to make one believe the project could fall on either side of the contentious debate it covers. WhatsApp now lets you fact-check forwarded messages
If you've received a link offering a miracle cure for COVID-19, you should know that it's fake. And yet, so many users just keep forwarding such messages, perhaps with good intentions, but ultimately adding to the confusion and polluting the internet with false information.
Now, WhatsApp has added a new feature, making it easier to check whether a piece of information is accurate. On forwarded messages, users will see a magnifying glass button. Clicking on it will open a Google search query for this information, which should typically resolve any doubts you might have about its accuracy.
WhatsApp points out that doing this uploads the message to the phone's browser, without revealing the content of the message to WhatsApp. Read more...

Seth Meyers slams White House's 'evil and stupid' reason for ditching its coronavirus testing plan
The U.S. now accounts for almost a quarter of all coronavirus deaths around the world, with the country's testing capabilities still woefully ill-equipped to handle the pandemic. Now Vanity Fair has reported the White House actually developed a coordinated national testing plan — but shelved it it believing the coronavirus would subside, and that it was primarily impacting blue states anyway.
"So they had a national testing plan, then scrapped it so they could blame the whole thing on Democratic governors," said Late Night host Seth Meyers.
"Not only is that evil and stupid, this is an infectious disease. This virus has travelled all over the world, did they not realise it could travel to red states too? 'It's a perfect plan! As long as no-one from New York ever goes to Florida.'" Read more...
