Zoom is different on your phone, so here’s when to use it

Zoom is different on your phone, so here’s when to use it

With the novel coronavirus keeping most of us stuck inside, Zoom video calls have become the new way to conduct business and socialize with family and friends.

Last week, for example, I played a virtual game of trivia with over 130 participants from around the world; listened in on a work meeting with 12 others; had a family check-in with my cousins and sister; and enjoyed a DJ livestream — all through Zoom.

For different activities different devices work best. But not everything works on the Zoom mobile or iPad app as it does on your laptop. As Zoom explains on its website as well as on its Google Play and Apple App stores, different mobile devices have different capabilities. Though the company doesn't state it explicitly, the Zoom experience on your phone or tablet is not as robust as the desktop version for Windows or Mac. Just look at the chat or screensharing features on mobile – they aren't the same.  Read more...

Quibi's tech lives up to the hype. The shows? That's up to you.

Quibi's tech lives up to the hype. The shows? That's up to you.

If you have an unquenchable thirst for streamed content and a few bucks to spare each month, Quibi would like a moment of your time.

An actual moment, in this case. The short-form video app is launching Monday in the U.S. and Canada after months of attention-grabbing headlines involving its star-studded original shows. Don't get it twisted, though — this isn't just a Netflix competitor. The Quibi app is mobile-only, so you won't be watching any of these shows on your TV.

If you think that seems like unfortunate timing given everything happening in the world right now, you could be right. A mobile-only streaming service may not be able to fully shine during a lockdown when hardly anyone one is particularly, well, mobile. The good news is Quibi does everything it sets out to do. John Krasinski, Lin-Manuel Miranda surprise a 'Hamilton' superfan with a special full-cast performance

John Krasinski, Lin-Manuel Miranda surprise a 'Hamilton' superfan with a special full-cast performance

John Krasinski's YouTube show Some Good News is only in its second week, but has just pulled off one of the most heartwarming Zoombombings of the coronavirus era (not that hard, considering some of the shockers we've already seen).

Aubrey, a 9-year-old Hamilton megafan, was due to see her favourite musical in person for the first time this week, but obviously that's not possible during the current pandemic shutdowns. As her mother tweeted to creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, she had to settle for watching him in Mary Poppins Returns instead.

Fortunately, Krasinski knows a gal who knows a guy. Next thing Aubrey knows, she's being treated to a three-way Zoom call with Miranda himself, which turns into a performance of "Alexander Hamilton" with basically the entire original Broadway cast. Anthony Ramos, Leslie Odom Jr, Daveed Diggs, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and a dozen more stars join the call, but nobody is phoning it in. Read more...

NordVPN is giving away free prizes to subscribers

NordVPN is giving away free prizes to subscribers

TL;DR: A three-year subscription to NordVPN is on sale for £2.68 per month, saving you 70% on list price.

The best way to understand how a VPN works is to imagine an encrypted tunnel that lets your online traffic flow securely. Nobody can see through the tunnel and get their hands on your internet data.

This is all you really need to know, because these services are playing a vital role in providing online security and data protection during this difficult period of increased uncertainty and cybercrime.

NordVPN is one of the most popular VPN services, and that's because it has a really strong reputation for security. There's a NordVPN application for Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus apps for iOS, Android, and Android TV. It also offers encrypted proxy extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Basically, you're protected however you get your work done at the moment. Read more...
