Tesla finally has Spotify, but there are other hacks for the Model 3 screen

I didn't realize how much I rely on texting until I couldn't access my messages while in a Tesla. Yes, I could make calls after I connected my iPhone to the car infotainment system in a (borrowed) Model 3 and use the Tesla voice control. But texting wasn't an option unless I took out my phone, which wasn't going to happen while driving. 

Tesla's big draw is that you don't need your phone mounted to the dash. The central touchscreen and operating system provides everything you need in one place: navigation, traffic, voice control, phone calls, music, podcasts, and much more. But no texting.

I wasn't the only one frustrated. For years, voice texting and message reading abilities have been highlighted as "missing" Tesla features. Along with Waze features, Apple Music integration, and other console skills, YouTube videos, Reddit pages, and Tesla forums are filled with tricks and tips to push the boundaries of Tesla's operating system. Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren are together at last in thrilling 'The Good Liar' trailer

How have Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Helen Mirren never been in a film together before now? Britain, what have you been doing? (Actually, don't answer that.) 

The Good Liar is here to fix this egregious oversight, though. With Sir Ian as a con artist and Dame Helen as his wealthy mark, it looks a bit more Six Degrees Of Separation than Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and like a sexy, vicious time for all involved. There's some nasty business in the back of a butcher's shop and some equally brutal, very British exchanging of looks and pointed questions over dinner.

Just a reminder: Facebook Messenger isn't end-to-end encrypted by default

Mark Zuckerberg really wants you to believe that Facebook is private. 

The CEO spoke expansively about the benefits of privacy at this year's F8 developer conference, going so far as to say that, in his mind, "the future is private." There's just one little problem with that sentiment: Your Facebook conversations, by default, aren't protected by end-to-end encryption — and that goes for Facebook Messenger as well. 

The platform is without a doubt a juggernaut, with significant influence over the way people communicate. As of earlier this year, according to Facebook, 20 billion messages between people and businesses were sent per month over Facebook Messenger. When Microsoft acquired GitHub, there was speculation (and fear on my behalf) that GitHub would end up axing Atom in favor of Visual Studio Code. Taking a look at the commit activity for Atom on github.com [1] shows that since the end of June 2019, development has basically stopped completely. Does anyone have any insight as to what is happening here? Has GitHub abandoned Atom development? Before you angrily shout that "Visual Studio Code" is better, or "just use VS code", please recall the current situation with Google Chrome mono-culture. Say what you will about Atom, but (especially in the last twelve months) the product had become very fast and in my opinion, provided a much better user experience that VS code. A new icon in the iOS 13.2 beta hints at noise-cancelling AirPods

in a week when Microsoft announced an expensive AirPods rival with no noise reduction, a new development has now pointed to Apple's famed earbuds getting that very feature.

A gray-and-white menu icon in the newest iOS 13.2 beta looks a whole lot like AirPods, but with more traditional ear cups on them, like other wired earbuds. Credit goes to 9to5Mac for the find, which was spotted in an accessibility menu.

The consensus around this seems to be that Apple will soon announce new AirPods with these cups on them for a snugger fit in the ear and noise reduction, which is not present in the current AirPods lineup. It's one of the few modern headphone perks that Apple hasn't found a way to fit into its flagship wireless buds yet. Read more...

YouTube will now let you auto-delete your video search and watch history

Your browsing experience on YouTube just became a little more private.

Google announced it is now rolling out an auto-delete feature for YouTube. This will allow users to keep their video search and watch history on the platform for a predetermined amount of time before the data is automatically wiped. 

YouTube’s options allow users to set their account to keep history data for 3 months, 18 months, or until they choose to manually delete it.

Users do have the ability to turn off history data completely, but some users would like this information to be temporarily stored so that they could easily revisit recently watched videos and searches. Read more...

Finland's president seemed very unhappy to be sitting next to Trump

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö just gave off some big Get Me Out Of Here Energy during a meeting with President Trump, and it looks like everyone noticed.

The two leaders met in the Oval Office on Wednesday for a joint press appearance, during which Niinistö said a total of like one sentence and then stared in horror the rest of the time while Trump self-censored the word "jockstrap" and addressed questions about his impeachment inquiry, his July phone call with the Ukrainian president, and the House Intel Committee Chair Adam Schiff.

At one point Trump even attempted to pat Niinistö's leg and Niinistö responded with a gesture and eye roll that screamed, "NO THANKS, DUDE!" Read more...

Coinbase now offers interest to people holding USDC on its exchange

Starting today, Coinbase users will earn interest for every USDC they hold on the Coinbase exchange, the company announced Wednesday. 

USDC is a special kind of cryptocurrency called a stablecoin, whose value is pegged to the U.S. dollar. USDC are backed by actual dollars and redeemable for USD at a 1:1 ratio. 

Yearly yield or APY for USDC held on Coinbase will be 1.25 percent, which is not a huge number but is comparable with the rate you can get for actual fiat dollars kept at the bank. There are also no limits or fees of any kind imposed on users; the USDC funds accrue in real time and are at the users' disposal at all times, Coinbase says.  Read more...

Microsoft teases dual-screen Surface Neo tablet for 2020

Microsoft closed its big hardware event on Wednesday by unveiling the Surface Neo, a long-rumored foldable tablet.

The book-sized tablet features two separate Gorilla Glass screens. Each side is 5.6mm thick, featuring the "thinnest LCD that's ever been created." The Surface Neo also features a magnetic Bluetooth keyboard and stylus that both charge wirelessly.

A 360-degree hinge enables a number of different combinations. The Neo can function as a tablet or laptop, but is even easier to carry than the Surface.

Forget Windows Phone. Microsoft just revealed a dual-screen Duo phone.

Microsoft shocked the crowd at its big hardware event Wednesday by revealing a dual-screen Android phone named the Surface Duo.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold, it doesn't have a flexible screen that folds. Instead, Duo has two separate 5.6-inch screens, which can be folded against each other on a hinge. Apps can run separately on each screen, or be displayed across both of them.

Microsoft drops powerful new Surface Pro X

Sure, Microsoft’s new Surface Pro 7, which the company unveiled Wednesday in New York City, looks nice.

But Microsoft had a surprise up its sleeve. Later during its big hardware event, it dropped the new Surface Pro X. 

It boasts a 13-inch screen, Surface Slim Pen, and the powerful new Surface SQ1 chip it developed with Qualcomm.

Why it feels like July, not October, over a huge part of the U.S.

Summer's passed, but temperatures in the nation's capital are expected to reach between 20 and 25 degrees above normal on Wednesday, meaning highs of around 96 degrees Fahrenheit.

And the heat trend is widespread. Well over 100 daily high temperature records will likely fall across a vast portion of the central and eastern U.S. over the coming days.

What's gives?
