What bartenders think about that 'AI-powered' bar with facial recognition

TwitterFacebook

The latest item to qualify in the "the Dystopian Future Is Now" category is a system that aims to help bartenders keep track of their customers with facial recognition and AI.

There's just one teensy problem: Bartenders are really, really not into it.

The British company DataSparQ announced the launch of the "A.I. Bar" Thursday. It works by using cameras and sensors to place people who come up to the bar in a queue; it's like a digital "take a number" system, but based on facial recognition.

People can see where they are by viewing themselves on a screen (with a number above their head, depicting their place in line). Bartenders will know who to serve by consulting a tablet that has pictures of all the people, in order of who they should serve first. It's supposed to also help bartenders keep track of whose ID needs to be checked. Read more...

The 'Decoy Effect': The Trick That Makes You Overspend

The 'Decoy Effect': The Trick That Makes You Overspend
When you buy a cup of coffee, you might have noticed that of the three size options, the medium-sized serving often costs almost as much as the large. There's a reason for that.

Apple suspends program that let humans listen in to Siri conversations

TwitterFacebook

Last week, The Guardian broke the news that Apple lets contractors listen to snippets of Siri recordings, often hearing confidential conversations including "medical information, drug deals, and recordings of couples having sex." Apple confirmed the existence of the program, called "grading," and said it was part of its quality control for Siri.

Now, however, TechCrunch reports Apple will be suspending the program globally.

“While we conduct a thorough review, we are suspending Siri grading globally. Additionally, as part of a future software update, users will have the ability to choose to participate in grading," the company said in a statement to the outlet.  Read more...

'The Church in the Darkness' turns cult worship into a thoughtful stealth game

TwitterFacebook

I knew this was a dangerous place for my brother to stay, but he wouldn't listen to reason.

In fact, reasoning with him wasn't even an option. But in this particular version of the story, cult leaders Isaac and Rebecca Walker had cast such a powerful spell on my unmoored sibling that he was adamant about staying. The only choice I had left at that point was deciding whether to kill the cult leaders or just walk away.

The Church in the Darkness is about an anti-capitalist cult in the 1970s that's fled to South America and established a commune there. You play Vic, the older sibling — brother or sister, the choice is yours — of Alex, who was bewitched by the Walkers' message and fled from home to join their revolution. Read more...

Desperate farmer destroys rare Lion King toy on live TV to make a point about online bullying

TwitterFacebook

On Friday morning, Australian time, a farmer went on live TV and took a pair of kitchen scissors to a tiny plastic Disney figurine potentially worth thousands of dollars, and everyone lost their minds.

When struggling farmers Stephen Black and Melissa Portingale found themselves in possession of the #001 furry Simba Ooshie — a wildly popular and rare collectible created by an Aussie supermarket chain — they saw a way to get themselves a bit of relief. They initially listed the little lion for A$5,000 ($3,400), which is, incredibly, the going rate for such things, on a farming buy/swap/sell page on Facebook.  Read more...
