Mandy Moore showed off some extremely '90s memorabilia from her early career

Mandy Moore showed off some extremely '90s memorabilia from her early career

A pandemic isn't the ideal time to release your first new album in a decade. Fortunately, Mandy Moore is using the time she would have been on tour to dig up some memorabilia from her early career.

Moore showed off her finds to Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday, which included an extremely '90s photo with the Backstreet Boys and an unauthorised Mandy Moore book.

"It's an actual book that was for sale for $12.95 that someone wrote without me knowing about it," said Moore. "But it has lots of fun facts. Like, this page here is '10 Things We Love About Mandy,' and the very first fact is 'Mandy is proud of her big feet.'"  Read more...

'Failed to provide any leadership': Seth Meyers examines how Trump left U.S. states on their own

The coronavirus pandemic has the U.S. is in shambles right now, but what else is new? Trump has continued to Trump throughout the crisis, stubbornly blustering on with his ill-informed ideas in defiance of all medical advice or logic. Now BuzzFeed News reports a man with no background in medical supplies was awarded a $69 million ventilator contract after tweeting at Trump that he could provide them. Shockingly, not a single one has arrived.

"There's literally a law that allows him to compel companies to make ventilators, and he's combing through his Twitter replies like he's putting a band together," quipped Late Night host Seth Meyers on Thursday. "Honestly, how long until he replies to a spam email offering free boner pills?" Read more...

The 'Parks and Recreation' reunion song was the most beautiful thing since Lil' Sebastian

The 'Parks and Recreation' reunion song was the most beautiful thing since Lil' Sebastian

Communities and friends band together in tough times — if anyone knows that, it's the former employees of the Parks and Recreation department of Pawnee, Indiana. The core cast of Parks and Recreation reunited for a socially distant special on Thursday to raise money for Feeding America.

When Leslie (Amy Poehler) lets on that phone trees and media outreach might be slightly tiring her out both mentally and emotionally, Ron (Nick Offerman) knows exactly what to do. He merges their video call to include all of Leslie's best friends as they join in a chorus of "5,000 Candles In The Wind." The rendition quickly put a smile on Leslie's face and ours as well. Sometimes a quick singalong with friends — even fictitious ones — is all you need for a little uplift.  Read more...

Quibi leaked users' emails to Google, Facebook, and Twitter

Mobile streaming service Quibi is less than a month old, but it's already shoving its sticky little fingers where they don't belong.

A new report by Victory Medium researcher Zach Edwards has revealed Quibi leaked user's signup emails to multiple third-party advertisers, including Google, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter.

In order to create a Quibi account, new users were asked to provide an email address to which the company would send a confirmation link. However, unbeknownst to said users, clicking the link sent their email address to third-party advertisers and analytics companies in plain text. Read more...

iPhone sales may be down, but business is booming for Apple Music and the App Store

Consumers aren't rushing to buy as many iPhones, iPads, or other Apple products as before the pandemic, but the company's services seem to be doing just fine.

During Thursday's earnings call, Apple disclosed that its services category, which includes the App Store and Apple TV+, hit an all-time revenue record of $13.3 billion for the second quarter.

The company saw strong performance within the App Store (for both downloads and search ads), Apple Music, video, and cloud services. App Store revenue also grew by double digits, as people continue to make in-app purchases and opt into subscriptions.  Read more...

Armed protesters entered Michigan’s state capitol during rally against stay-at-home order

Armed protesters take part in an “American Patriot Rally,” organized on April 30, 2020, by Michigan United for Liberty on the steps of the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing, MI, demanding the reopening of businesses. | Jeff Kowalsky/AFP via Getty Images

Heavily-armed men were among the crowd of hundreds of protestors who turned out to protest Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive actions.

Hundreds of demonstrators — some of them heavily armed — crowded into Michigan’s state capitol Thursday afternoon to protest against Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s shelter-at-home order.

The demonstration began outside the capitol early in the day in heavy rain, but later in the afternoon, police allowed several hundred protestors — many not wearing masks — inside the building itself.

Protestors stood in the gallery while others attempted to gain access to the House floor, cramming themselves into the entryway chanting “Let us in!” They were held at bay by the chamber’s Sergeant-at-Arms.

While not all protestors were armed, there were some armed men in the crowd inside. Michigan is an open-carry state, and people are allowed to openly carry inside the state capitol, though signs and banners are banned from the building to prevent potential damage to the architecture.

Democratic State Sen. Dayna Polehanki tweeted that some of her colleagues had worn bullet-proof vests to cast their votes.

Journalist Anna Liz Nichols of the nonprofit news organization Michigan Advance tweeted that she was hit by the butt of a protestor’s rifle, later clarifying that she’s “completely fine.”

As the protests progressed, chants of “lock her up,” and “heil Whitmer,” broke out inside the capitol.

The “American Patriot Rally” was organized in response to a vote being debated in the state legislature Thursday on whether to continue Michigan’s state of emergency, which was declared March 10 to address the coronavirus pandemic.

The Republican-held legislature ultimately voted to revoke the emergency declaration Thursday as protestors looked on. Republican state legislators are now preparing to sue the governor over her shelter-at-home order, despite a state court ruling Wednesday that said the order was constitutional.

As of April 30, Michigan has over 41,300 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and over 3,700 deaths, according to state government data.

Whitmer’s shelter-at-home order has been in place since March 23, but she loosened the order’s breadth in her latest extension last Friday, allowing landscapers, lawn-service companies, plant nurseries, and bike repair shops to reopen under strict social distancing measures. The order also allows some outdoor recreational activity to be resumed.

According to NBC News, a group called Michigan United for Liberty organized Thursday’s rally. The same group organized the first protest against social distancing in the state, on April 7.

MUFL’s Facebook event group for Thursday’s protest was taken down by Facebook last week, according to VICE News. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Good Morning America on April 20 that groups organizing social distancing protests classify as “harmful misinformation” and said the company would take down posts promoting such events.

Michigan has been a hotspot of right-wing protests against the governor’s social distancing policies. On April 16, a different conservative group, Michigan Conservative Coalition, along with the US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos-linked group Michigan Freedom Fund, organized “Operation Gridlock” to protest Whitmer’s executive actions.

Operation Gridlock was initially supposed to consist of protestors driving around in their cars and trucks, honking their horns and creating noise to protest the shelter-at-home order.

But some protestors eventually left their vehicles, snarling traffic and preventing health care workers from getting to work on time, turning the event into a makeshift political rally. Some attendees wore “Make America Great Again” gear while others displayed confederate flags. As with Thursday’s protest at the capitol, some heavily-armed men gathered on the steps of the state capitol.

The next morning, President Donald Trump tweeted in support of the protest.

The Michigan protests are part of a larger series of conservative protest campaigns against shelter-at-home orders and other social distancing policies that have spanned multiple states. Many of the protest groups rely on a small pool of conservative financiers, organizers of the actual protests are typically locally-based.

As Vox’s Jane Coaston explains, these protests in Michigan and elsewhere are partly about the specifics of the lockdowns put in place in the various states and the economic hardship they’ve created. But, Coaston says, “many of those involved in the protests are connected not by mere concern” over these policies, “but by their efforts to reelect the president.”

“Trump’s political gambit requires that the coronavirus becomes a pandemic of Democratic governors and the fault of blue states while other states get right back to business as usual,” Coaston writes.

Reddit VP: 'Ya, we f*cked up.'

Reddit botched the rollout of a new feature that could have endangered some vulnerable users — and now it is eating crow.

On Wednesday, Reddit announced that it was initiating a limited rollout of a new group chat feature called "Start Chatting" that would allow subreddit members to speak directly with each other in chatrooms. It was originally positioned as a way for Redditors to connect with people during COVID-19 social distancing.

The problem? Not only was there no way for communities to opt out of the feature, but moderators also would not be able to, well, moderate them. In the over 1,500 comments to the original announcement, many mods quickly pointed out that this made the chat function ripe for abuse by trolls. Read more...

6 of the best digital radios for every listener

Radio is alive and well, despite what you may have been led to believe. The likes of Amazon Music and Spotify were supposed to bring about a changing of the guard but radio has stubbornly refused to go anywhere, and that's a good thing.

Millions of people still tune in to their favourite shows every week, despite all of the podcasts and on-demand music on offer. This is due in part to the growing popularity of DAB (digital audio broadcasting) radio, which allows for less interference, more stations, and a stronger signal. Sounds pretty good, right?

'Bon voyage': Elon Musk tells Twitter followers to get lost following meltdown

'Bon voyage': Elon Musk tells Twitter followers to get lost following meltdown

Elon Musk is having a rough 24 hours, and if his Twitter followers don't like it, then they can just get bent.

The Tesla CEO made waves late last night for a bizarre rant about "freedom," only to completely melt down during a Wednesday Tesla earnings call when asked about Bay Area shelter-in-place orders.

Musk's appetite for self-righteousness apparently wasn't sated, however, and following the call he hopped on Twitter to tell his 33.4 million followers that if they didn't like his misrepresentation of facts then they should get lost.

Notably, Musk claimed incorrectly (among other things) that Bay Area officials are "forcibly imprisoning people in their homes." To be clear, they are not.  Read more...

Facebook sees a spike in monthly active users in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak

Facebook sees a spike in monthly active users in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak

It probably comes as a shock to no one that people are using Facebook, and its additional social media platforms, more than ever under lockdown due to the coronavirus.

During Wednesday's earnings call, the company announced its seen a huge spike in its monthly active users with a 10 percent year over year increase.

On the call, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO, revealed that for the first time ever more than three billion people have been using Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, or Messenger each month.

This includes 2.6 billion people using Facebook alone and more than 2.3 billion people using at least one of its services each day. Read more...

TikTok surpasses 2 billion global downloads

TikTok surpasses 2 billion global downloads

Quarantine + addictive dance videos = app domination.

TikTok has surpassed 2 billion downloads, mobile app analytics company Sensor Tower reported Wednesday. (April 29). The 315 million installs it gained in Q1 of 2020 alone also reportedly give it the title of "most downloads for any app ever in a quarter."

Mashable has reached out to TikTok to confirm Sensor Tower's data, and will update this story if and when we hear back.

Sensor Tower is attributing the burst in downloads at least in part to the global pandemic. While it notes that TikTok has been consistently on the rise, Sensor Tower views the spike in downloads over the last two months as a consequence of people being confined to their homes and, frankly, bored.  Read more...

Elon Musk calls stay-at-home order ‘fascist’ during Tesla earnings call

Elon Musk had even more to say about social distancing measures after he rage-tweeted on the topic Wednesday morning.

Tesla's first quarter earnings call Wednesday afternoon (April 29) started with prepared marks from CEO Elon Musk that noticeably and awkwardly avoided mentioning coronavirus or anything about the pandemic.

But as the call progressed, Musk's true feelings about shelter-in-place requirements, like those in the Bay Area that are keeping his Fremont, California car plant shut down until at least June, surfaced. He could barely contain himself as he used profanity to describe his thoughts on shelter-in-place efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19.  Read more...

'Crop dusting us with corona': Seth Meyers tells joggers to keep their social distance

'Crop dusting us with corona': Seth Meyers tells joggers to keep their social distance

One of the few legitimate reasons for leaving your home amidst the coronavirus pandemic is to get some safely socially-distanced exercise. Unfortunately, as Late Night host Seth Meyers noted on Tuesday, some joggers are eschewing simple precautionary measures in favour of running up behind people and panting spittle like germ sprinklers.

"It's like a horror movie, except Jason had the decency to wear a mask," quipped Meyers.

Some people who are infected with the coronavirus only display mild symptoms, or even no symptoms at all. They're still contagious though, meaning joggers could be spreading the disease without even realising. The risk may be relatively small but it isn't non-existent, and it's still extremely disconcerting to come in close contact with a gasping stranger in the current climate. Read more...

Justin Amash just announced an exploratory committee for a bid for the White House

The only conservative to vote for impeachment will examine seeking the Libertarian Party nomination

Rep. Justin Amash (I-MI), a libertarian House representative and frequent critic of Donald Trump’s presidency, announced his intention on Tuesday to launch an exploratory committee to examine a run for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination.

The announcement was not a surprise, as Amash paused campaigning for his Congressional seat to “carefully consider a presidential run” back on April 15th. On Twitter, Rep. Amash said, “We’re ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together. I’m excited and honored to be taking these first steps toward serving Americans of every background as president.”

A founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, Amash left the Republican Party in July of 2019, writing in a Washington Post op-ed that “preserving liberty means telling the Republican Party and the Democratic Party that we’ll no longer let them play their partisan game at our expense.” He was the only conservative to vote for impeaching President Trump.

When I spoke to Amash last year, he decried government spending by both parties and express his abiding commitment to libertarian ideals. He said, “One of the things I like to tell libertarians when I go to conferences and other places is that libertarians are not really a small minority in the country. Most Americans have rather libertarian tendencies or classical liberal tendencies — the spirit of this country is very much libertarian or classical liberal.”

Conservatives (and libertarians) are divided on the potential of Amash’s run, with some arguing that Amash could take valuable votes away from Democratic nominee Joe Biden and help Donald Trump. The actual research on third-party voters is a little complicated. Because so few Americans vote third party, it’s often hard to say if they have a real impact on the outcome of the race. But it’s certainly a get for the Libertarian Party. Candidate Jacob Hornberger told Reason Magazine that an outside candidacy could help the Libertarian Party. “When these people come in from outside the party, it provides a prestige factor.”

Libertarian Party chairman Nicholas Sarwark told me, “We welcome Congressman Amash to the Libertarian Party and the Presidential nomination contest. While he will have to win support of the majority of convention delegates to receive the nomination, his entry is another sign that more Americans are seeking something different from the tribal politics of the red and blue teams.”

I’ve reached out to Amash’s office and campaign, and will update if and when I hear back.

You think the wildly diverse characters of the Star Wars universe drink their coffee the same way?

Not at all, according to popular Archive of Our Own author Violet Wilson. The fanfiction writer tweeted a thread of the different ways characters from all three Star Wars trilogies — and the various standalone movies — would consume their caffeine.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, for one, would take pride in his well-balanced brew.

Everyone can pull off thigh-high boots thanks to the sexy legs meme

A sexy pair of legs in thigh-high leather boots has gone viral on Twitter, though not only because they are incredibly sexy. Users are exploiting the way Twitter displays uploaded images to match the enviable pins with unlikely pop culture icons, creating a confusingly attractive meme.

The glorious gams belong to Lisa from K-pop group Blackpink, who wore the black boots and booty shorts in a solo dance performance to QUIN and 6LACK's "Mushroom Black." Twitter's K-pop fans began adorning their favorite singers with Lisa's statuesque limbs shortly after the video's April 20 premiere.

The trend has since spread to include all manner of pop-culture figures, remixing famous scenes to add some strong seductive energy. It turns out there isn't much Lisa's legs can't improve. Read more...

Brits are good at many things, like queuing and apologising. We practise this sort of activity on a regular basis, so of course we're good at it.

Stanley Tucci, Guy Fieri, and Martha Stewart surprise fans for John Krasinski's celeb potluck

John Krasinski's wholesome YouTube series Some Good News keeps delivering the surprise-celeb goods, with this week's food-themed segment bringing home cooks face to digital face with famous foodies.

Fans who sent Krasinski their favorite family feeds were treated to a video chat not only with the SGN host but with a celebrity, chef, or celebrity chef who'd cooked their recipe themselvesCocktail king of the isolation internet (and the host's brother-in-law) Stanley Tucci had a go at a one nanna's TikTok Quarantini, which sounds like a boozy Orange Julius. Martha Stewart praised a four-generation-strong pierogi recipe as close to her own grandmother's. Momofuku honcho Dave Chang gave a very stoked fan from Krasinski's hometown props for her wine quantities. And Guy Fieri made some glorious sloppy joe-ish monster subs dubbed "dynamites" before getting a surprise of his own from Krasinski. Read more...

Australia's new coronavirus tracking app was downloaded a million times in just 5 hours

The Australian government's new coronavirus contact tracing app was downloaded one million times within five hours of launch, meaning approximately one out of every 25 Australians is using it. It's a notable uptake considering some Australians had expressed concerns about privacy issues.

Released on Sunday, COVIDSafe uses Bluetooth to connect with other phones within 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) which also have the app installed. If they are in contact for over 15 minutes, the app records data such as the date, time, contact distance and duration, and the other user's encrypted identification code. This information is stored on the user's phone for 21 days, after which it is automatically deleted. Read more...
