This $20 2-in-1 plug can turn virtually any device into a smart one

TwitterFacebook

They say life imitates art — and in this case, "art" is Smart House, the 1999 Disney Channel original movie about a family whose life is controlled by PAT, their home's artificially intelligent personal assistant. Nearly two decades after the film's debut, we now have virtual assistants that can change the temperature of our homes, play music, and adjust lighting just like PAT could — although your average Google Home is far less bossy, to be sure.

Long story short: modern technology is smarter than ever. So where does that leave all of our older appliances — the ones that weren't designed with today's popular personal assistants in mind?  Read more...

Samsung's 'The Frame' 4K TV is on sale for up to $600 off, doubles as home decor

TwitterFacebook

Editor's note: Mashable and PC Mag are both owned by Ziff Davis.

We get it — the thought of spending over a grand on a new TV can be nauseating, no matter how badly you need to upgrade from your crappy 32-inch.

But you'd probably be more likely to make the jump if that purchase kills two birds with one stone, right?

Tech nerds and HGTV fans alike can drool over this one: This 4K TV from Samsung is literally called "The Frame" and offers the best of both worlds, doubling as the room's main piece of wall decor. PC Mag has both the 55-inch and 65-inch models on sale in their shop for $1,399.99 and $1,899.99, respectively — a savings of up to $600 and significantly cheaper than what Amazon is offering for the same device. Stephen Colbert absolutely roasts Trump's comments about climate change report

TwitterFacebook

Trump doesn't believe a damning climate change study produced by his own government, something that truly perplexed The Late Show host Stephen Colbert.

Aside from telling reporters he'd read "some" of the report, which warns that climate change will not only impact global health, but will cost the U.S. economy hundreds of billions of dollars annually, Trump referred to it as "fine."

“Fine?” Colbert said. “If I had to describe this report in one word it would not be 'fine.' It would be a different word that begins with F.”

“As in if you don’t believe in climate change at this point you are fined in the head." Read more...

Ice-T discusses that whole thing about him never eating a bagel

TwitterFacebook

A few weeks ago, people caught wind of the fact that Ice-T had never eaten a bagel until Law and Order: SVU, when he was required to eat one. Right? Huge.

Ice-T and co-star Mariska Hargitay appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, where they were quizzed about the kerfuffle. For Ice-T, he just had to cop the bagel, although he didn't actually swallow.

"On the show they wanted me to eat a bagel. I said I don't eat bagels," Ice-T replied. "But it was in the script, so you know I just did it. But I acted like I ate it, I didn't eat it."

The actor eventually did eat a bagel, explaining he recently filmed an ad for dating app Coffee Meets Bagel, where he well, didn't enjoy it. "I ate one, I had one bite, and it felt like I ate a loaf of bread. Why would I eat an unsweetened donut?" he said. Read more...

Starbucks says it's going to block porn on its public WiFi

TwitterFacebook

If you've been pairing your peppermint mocha at Starbucks with a little porn, your time is up.

As of 2019, folks won't be able to use the coffee chain's public WiFI to watch porn, as first reported by Business Insider

Starbucks has reportedly figured out a way to block people from watching pornographic material using its WiFI, and that it will start rolling it out next year.

"To ensure the Third Place remains safe and welcoming to all, we have identified a solution to prevent this content from being viewed within our stores and we will begin introducing it to our U.S. locations in 2019," a Starbucks representative told the publisher. Read more...

Sick of his own family, Conan O'Brien hires a new one in Japan

TwitterFacebook

They say you can't choose your family, but that doesn't really apply in Japan.

Annoyed with his own family who don't laugh enough at his jokes, Conan O'Brien went and hired a different wife, daughter and father from a family rental agency in Tokyo.

Yes, there's a whole industry in Japan dedicated to the renting of family members to lonely people, which means you can tell them what to do.

'Mrs Doubtfire' cast reunites after 25 years, remembers Robin Williams

TwitterFacebook

It's been 25 years since the legendary Robin Williams posed as a rock-n-rollin' nanny, and his fellow cast members have reunited with fond memories of the late great comedian.

Classic family film Mrs Doubtfire was released in 1993, starring Williams and Oscar winner Sally Field. And the actors who played the Hillard children — Lisa Jakub as Lydia, Matthew Lawrence as Chris, and itty bitty Mara Wilson as Natalie, are all grown up.

Reuniting to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the film (sadly not in the house), the three joined co-star Pierce Brosnan, who played Field's swanky new boyfriend Stu in the film for an interview on TODAY with NBC's Gadi Schwartz.  Read more...

How to be an ethical-ish holiday shopper when every option is bad

TwitterFacebook

At this point, it should be pretty clear no form of holiday shopping is good for the world.

Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. I'm pretty confident that purchasing lemonade from your neighborhood child-led not-for-profit lemonade stand is safe, assuming those lemons were procured locally by unionized farm workers and those children are paid a living (5 dimes an hour) wage.

Other than that, the options are limited. That doesn't mean you can't shop — but instead of following "the do no harm" method, you might need to follow the "do the least amount of harm" school of thought.

Amazon faces backlash after running shady baby registry ad campaign

TwitterFacebook

Amazon is apparently getting really good at ripping off your friends and family.

The e-commerce giant faced widespread backlash today following a Wall Street Journal report detailing a rather shady advertising effort from the Jeff Bezos-helmed behemoth. Specifically, the company has been surreptitiously placing advertisements into baby registries — effectively disguising those ads as items requested by expecting parents — with only a tiny and easily overlooked "Sponsored" label to distinguish them from the rest of the listed gifts.

In other words, after someone makes a baby registry filled with items he or she actually needs, Amazon then slips in a few products as well — often without the knowledge of the person who created the list or those doing the buying.  Read more...

Facebook users raised most amount ever on Giving Tuesday

TwitterFacebook

Facebook encouraged users to create and share fundraising campaigns to support their favorite causes. Facebook and PayPal partnered to match up to $7 million in donations made to U.S. nonprofits. More specifically, they promised to match up to $20,000 per donor and $250,000 per nonprofit. The $7 million was matched seconds after 8 a.m. EST.

Google got rid of 'Smart Compose' pronouns because humans are sexist

TwitterFacebook

Unlike a lot of email signatures these days, Gmail doesn't specify its preferred pronoun.

To avoid perpetuating gender bias, Gmail stopped its "Smart Compose" text prediction feature — which provides likely ends of sentences and other phrases for Gmail users while composing emails — from suggesting pronouns, Reuters reported Tuesday

Google told Mashable that Smart Compose launched in May with that bias-averting policy already in place. However, Gmail product manager Paul Lambert only recently revealed this intentional move in interviews with Reuters.  Read more...

Apple chimes in on iPhone XR sales but offers no specifics

TwitterFacebook

Apple mixed things up with now fewer than three new iPhones this year — all of them incorporating Face ID and the iPhone X design language.

Amid several reports of Apple lowering orders for iPhones components, the tech giant is finally chiming in. Speaking to CNET, Apple Vice President of Product Marketing Greg Joswiak says the iPhone XR has "been our most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available."

Joswiak seems to be saying the iPhone XR has outsold the iPhone XS and XS Max since its launch on Oct. 26 (and probably the older iPhones as well). That's not a complete shock: The iPhone XR is the "cheaper" iPhone at $749, but it incorporates almost all of the features of its more expensive brothers. Read more...

Half Christmas trees hope to stop your pets and kids from messing with the tree

YouTube Originals will soon be free to watch for everyone

TwitterFacebook

YouTube is changing its original content strategy.

Starting next year, YouTube will make its original content free to watch on the platform. Previously, the company's scripted shows like the Karate Kid spinoff Cobra Kai were only made available to users who paid for its subscription offering, YouTube Premium. For non-Premium subscribers, YouTube's free to watch originals will be ad-supported.

YouTube will also pull back on its scripted original content in 2020 as it reduces its production budget in light of the pivot in strategy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The video platform's paid subscription service originally launched in 2015 as YouTube Red. The company rebranded the service as YouTube Premium last year. In the early days of the subscription service, the platform's original content mostly consisted of premium series’ starring YouTube creators like PewDiePie. Not too long after, the site started investing in higher quality productions with films like Step Up: High Water, based on the dance movie franchise, and the sci-fi series “Origin” from the same production company who created Netflix’s The Crown.
