Facebook briefly blocked breaking news stories about its security breach — and that’s a problem

TwitterFacebook

This afternoon, Facebook held an emergency press conference to disclose a startling security breach. The company said 50 million Facebook accounts were affected in a hack that allowed attackers to control an account as if they were the account holders.

"Since we’ve only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed," said Facebook’s VP of product management Guy Rosen during a morning press call. "We also don’t know who’s behind these attacks or where they’re based."

TwitterFacebook

So Facebook just got pwned. Like, badly.

The company announced today that hackers obtained access to 50 million users' accounts, and could use them as if the accounts were their own. But what does that mean for you? Was your account one of the ones affected, and, if so, what can you do to protect your account going forward?

While there remain a lot of unanswered questions about what data was stolen, and who is responsible, there are thankfully a few clear steps you can take to stop the bleeding. Whether it's too late to really matter, well, that's a different question.  Read more...

The cigarette-loving robot that stole America's heart

TwitterFacebook

Robots are a pretty normal part of modern life. We buy them as toys for kids, get some to help clean our homes, and sometimes see them on the big screen. Back in 1939, robots were a lot rarer, and if you did see one, it was probably some human inside a costume, sweating bullets. But not Elektro. He was his own cigarette-smoking, seven-foot-tall self. He wowed crowds across the U.S. and can rightly claim the title of being the first robot celebrity. Sorry, R2-D2.  Read more...

Soul Electronics Emotion review: Affordable wireless earbuds that sound good

TwitterFacebook
Soul Electronics Emotion
$39.99
The Good
Well-balanced sound • Bass isn't overmixed • Easy Bluetooth pairing • Comfortable to wear for long periods of time
The Bad
Slippery case with small indent can make it hard to open • Shorter than expected battery life • Microphone is basically unusable for phone calls
The Bottom Line
The Soul Electronics Emotion wireless earbuds aren't perfect. But when the price is just $50, it's easier to look past the negative and enjoy the well-balanced sound.

Save $50 on a KitchenAid cold brew coffee maker from Walmart

TwitterFacebook

Cold brew is the trendy drink du jour for coffee lovers these days. Rather than brewing hot coffee and icing it down, cold brew is literally brewed while, well, cold. This helps to eliminate much of the acidity you'd get from drip coffee.

While you can snag cold brew at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, that daily habit can quickly add up, which is why we're big fans of making our own at home.

The KitchenAid cold brew coffee maker is available from Walmart for just $79.93, which is $50 off the original list price of $129.99.

This cold brew maker is a pretty simple and straightforward setup. Load up the filter with coffee grinds and water, let it steep inside the fridge, and pour yourself a glass once it's ready. Read more...

Christine Blasey Ford testifies before 17 male senators and almost no women

TwitterFacebook

Christine Blasey Ford delivered gut-wrenching testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday — and not to the most representative audience, either.

Kavanaugh's accuser told her story to 17 male Senators and just four female Senators today.  Female prosecutor Rachel Mitchell was also on the panel to assist in the questioning. The eleven Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are all white men.

All four female senators — Senator Klobuchar of Minnesota, Senators Harris and Feinstein of California, and Senator Hirono of Hawaii — are Democrats.  Read more...

Oppo's new Find X phone might have an unearthly 10GB of RAM

TwitterFacebook

The age of double-digit RAM in smartphones is upon us.

Leaker Ice Universe (via The Leaker) has dug out a filing with TENAA, a Chinese regulatory body, for Oppo's next Find X variant, which will have a whopping 10GB of RAM.

OPPO Find X adds a 10GB RAM version, which will be the world's first 10GB RAM Smartphonepic.twitter.com/ULdntw6X95

— Ice universe (@UniverseIce) September 27, 2018

The filing reveals one other tidbit about the phone: it will also have 256GB of storage. There's no word on where or when it might launch, though.

We've seen phones with as much as 8GB of RAM — the OnePlus 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and Oppo's original Find X come to mind — but we've never seen a phone with 10GB of RAM, certainly not one coming from a major phone maker.  Read more...

Russian hackers are taking their cyber warfare to the next level

TwitterFacebook

Russian hackers are upping the ante of their cyberattacks.

The next level of cyber warfare may not be here thanks to the latest weapon being utilized by Russian hackers.

Researchers with the cybersecurity company ESET have discovered what is believed to be the first known UEFI rootkit malware used in a cyber attack. In a blog post, ESET explains:

If the name “Fancy Bear” sounds familiar, it’s because they’re the hacking group embedded in Russia’s GRU intelligence agency that has been found responsible for the 2016 DNC emails hack and various misinformation campaigns surrounding the US elections. Earlier this summer, special counsel Robert Mueller indicted a number of Russian nationals with the Fancy Bear hacking group for their role in these attacks. Read more...

Sophie Turner says 'Game of Thrones' finale will divide fans

TwitterFacebook

While promoting her upcoming film Dark Phoenix, Sophie Turner teased the Game of Thrones finale (which caused "a lot of tears") as one that may divide the show's loyal fan base.

"I think a lot of fans will be disappointed and a lot of fans will be over the moon," she said.

“As an actor it was really satisfying," she told IGN of filming the finale. "I think for everyone, everyone’s storylines — to be able to act out the way that it all ends. It was really satisfying for us. Who knows if it will be satisfying for the fans. I think a lot of fans will be disappointed and a lot of fans will be over the moon, I think. I think it will be really interesting to see people’s reactions, but for me reading the script it was just like heartbreaking…” Read more...

Gender stereotypes are still alive and well in the online dating world, study says

TwitterFacebook

Women, if you think it serves you well to write the first message after matching with a guy, you're wrong. Men, if you think that financial success is irrelevant in dating, you, too, are mistaken. At least if we are to believe the numbers.

Online dating may have practically revolutionised how we date in modern society, but apparently traditional gender roles still dictate how men and women engage in online courtship.

In a major new study from the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), researchers have looked at data from 150,000 – exclusively cisgendered, heterosexual – users on the dating site eHarmony over a 10 year period in the UK. Their findings show that both men and women still exhibit gender stereotypical behaviour when dating online.   Read more...
