10 of the best weather stations, according to online reviews

TwitterFacebook

Weather is one of our big obsessions here at Mashable (just take a look at our Science page if you don't believe us). We've covered everything from incoming tornadoes in the midwest that contribute to climate change to our favorite cloud types (seriously). We even coined the phrase "bomb cyclone" to describe the storm that brought some epic snowfall back in January. Yup, we love the weather as much as we do Marvel movies and iPhones

If you're as obsessed with forecasts and weather warnings as we are, then a weather station should be high up on your shopping list. (Or if you know someone who loves all things weather and science, then a weather station could make a great gift for them.) Read more...

Netflix burns 'Roseanne', recommends a superior alternative

TwitterFacebook

Roseanne may be canceled, but Netflix wants you to fill the void (is it even a void?) with better content immediately. The streaming platform hosts plenty of non-problematic family comedies, starting with One Day at a Time, which it recommended in a tweet indirectly throwing shade at Roseanne.

Reminder: @OneDayAtATime is a sitcom about a tight-knit, working class family that tackles extremely topical social issues in a smart and innovative way. Ya know, if you’re suddenly looking for a show like that… pic.twitter.com/er4Fx6Cxb6

12 of the best earbuds on Amazon, according to customer reviews

TwitterFacebook

Sure, they're small, but that doesn't mean earbuds are a purchase to be taken lightly.

You've probably been listening to music on the go since you were about 12. So you know that finding a good pair of earbuds is actually pretty tricky. (I've gone through more in my lifetime than I can count.)

And while picking up a $5 pair in the checkout line is easy enough, you know you'll just be back again next month (or sooner) for a new pair because they stopped working.

Does that mean all earbuds are crap? No way. It's simply not true that bass, noise cancellation, and crisp sound can only be found in fancy over-ear headphones. Some of us prefer our headphones to be a little more inconspicuous and portable. Read more...

6 of the best security software solutions for 2018

TwitterFacebook

Internet security is an important issue for all of us. It's easy to be complacent and assume that it'll never happen to you — you're too sensible and secure with your data after all, right? But keeping your computer secure from various threats online is no longer just about avoiding clicking on the "wrong" link, and utilizing common sense. Nor is it just about protecting yourself from viruses.

It's worth it to invest in software like Norton or McAfee — two of our top picks — that can help keep your computer secure.

What threats are out there?

Zero-day vulnerabilities are one key way of suffering a breach of your information before anyone even knows an issue is there. Effectively, they're software flaws or bugs often found by cyber criminals, before many companies realize what's happened. Due to their popularity, commonly used software like Java, Adobe's PDF reader and Flash Player are ripe for exploitation with many zero-day attacks stemming from the popular plug-ins. Read more...

Which tablet to buy for your kid: These are 5 of the best out right now

TwitterFacebook

Kids are device-hungry nuts these days. Seriously, WTF happened to Sesame Street and a book before bedtime? But we digress.

Technology has changed a lot since you were small. Your kids have probably mastered the features on your iPhone better than you have due to constantly asking to play with it. And when you do eventually get it back, it's a sticky mess covered in slobber and other unexplainable slimes. But in the age of touch screens and constant connectivity, there's not really a way to say "no" without feeling like a parent from the dark ages. Even the animals in Zootopia have smartphones. (Yes seriously.) Read more...

Jet is having a huge sale on vacuums, with deals on Roombas, Dyson, Bissell, and more

TwitterFacebook

We love vacuums, as evidenced by the fact that we wrote giant stories on the best robot ones and the best traditional ones — and genuinely enjoyed every minute of it.

So obviously, when we found out that Jet is having a pretty massive sale on vacuums this week, "Hell yes" was the immediate thought.

Whether you're trying to get in on the robot vacuum action, are a more traditional upright vacuum person, or need a handheld one for little messes, Jet has got your back on this one. (Even if you don't need a new one, just use this as a chance to snag an early holiday gift for someone.) Read more...

Battle of the budget smartphones

TwitterFacebook

Huawei Honor  7A is here to rule the roost for budget smartphones in India.

Before May 2018, if you were on a tight budget, it was always the Redmi Note 5 that would come to your mind. But the newly launched Honor 7A is here to dethrone the current champion

Whats it got that Redmi’s not? It has the cool new facial recognition for unlocking your phone. So all your pricey cat photos and other important items in your phone can’t be accessed by just any colleague snooping around to get more dirt on you. There’s a fingerprint unlock system too, in case you want to double lock your phone

It also has a setup for rear dual cameras - which  means your point and shoot game is going to be an enjoyable affair where you are the one who gets the job of clicking photos in your friend circle and family.  Read more...

The 'Crimes of Grindelwald' script cover is hiding a big clue

Steam's removal of the 'Active Shooter' game addresses a symptom, not the cause

TwitterFacebook

Let's be clear about one thing up front: There is no reasonable scenario where a video game about shooting up a high school is acceptable. None.

How then did Active Shooter, a game that promised to let you play the role of a school shooter while tracking stats like "civilians killed" and "cops killed," end up with a product page on Steam? The game has since been dropped, but that it was there at all is troubling.

Steam, for anyone out there who might not know, is an online marketplace that specializes in PC games. There are other, similar marketplaces like GOG or EA's Origin, but Valve Corporation's Steam service commands the most attention and the largest audience. Read more...

Apple's WWDC surprise for the Apple Watch just leaked, and it's pretty cool

TwitterFacebook

It looks like Apple has something special in store for Pride Month.

Just yesterday, iOS 11.4 and watchOS 4.3.1 began rolling out to users, and already 9to5Mac has spotted a hidden watch face in code.

A new face with a stylized rainbow animation will arrive on the Apple Watch on Monday, not so coincidentally the first day of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The giveaway is the timing: According to the code, it should launch at 12 p.m. Pacific Time, which should be right about when the opening keynote ends.

Why 'The Tale' is the movie everyone is talking about

TwitterFacebook

Jennifer Fox's The Tale didn't get the fanfare of a traditional movie premiere, and a quick look at the trailer explains whyThe Tale is the true story of Fox herself coming to terms with her sexual assault as a 13-year-old. It's heartbreaking, disturbing, and often difficult to watch – all of which makes it essential.

Though it is in many ways the story of what happened, The Tale stands out because it is the story of Fox (portrayed by Laura Dern) realizing what happened, decades later. The director has been emphatic about the fact that this is her story, both to pre-empt critics of its discomfiting nature and to keep these conversations going.  Read more...

14 totally real side effects of Ambien, according to Dr. Roseanne Barr

TwitterFacebook

Roseanne Barr has claimed that Ambien — not racism — was responsible for her racist outburst on Twitter yesterday.

If the simple sleeping pill caused her to spew anachronistic racial epithets in the middle of the night, what else can she blame on it? Here are just a few of the apparent side effects of Ambien, if we are to believe the research conducted by the Roseanne Barr School of Medicine. Read more...

Consumer Reports flips, recommends Tesla Model 3 after braking fix

TwitterFacebook

Only about a week after the independent review publication Consumer Reports determined it couldn't recommend the all-electric Tesla Model 3 sedan, it's flipped.

On Wednesday, CR came out with an updated overview of the newest Tesla, noting it had "big flaws." Now it's recommending the vehicle.

Last week, issues with braking distance and touchscreen controls prevented the review site from recommending the more affordably priced sedan. After Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised "over-the-air" updates to improve braking, CR gave the car another chance. Read more...

Simone Giertz, creator of 'Shitty Robots,' undergoes surgery to remove brain tumor

TwitterFacebook

Simone Giertz went into brain surgery in the most positive way possible.

The YouTuber and "Shitty Robot" creator posted a video before her surgery on Wednesday, joking that she couldn't wait to see photos of her brain because she was convinced that it was beautiful. She announced that she had a non-cancerous brain tumor in April.

"I'm pretty scared," Giertz admitted in the video. "But that's the healthy response to the prospect of having your skull cut open."

UPDATE: May 30, 2018, 9:02 p.m. PDT A post to Giertz's Twitter account says that she is out of surgery and her doctors are "very pleased" with how the procedure went. In typical Giertz fashion, she apparently also made an inappropriate joke.  Read more...

Extreme flooding in Maryland is a glimpse into our disaster-filled future

TwitterFacebook

Last weekend, Ellicott City's quaint Main Street, with red, white, and blue decorations draped from storefronts, became a churning brown river

While several factors resulted in this Maryland town's second "1,000-year storm" occurring in just the last 22 months, one increasingly significant contribution to the flooding is the amount of water vapor accumulating in Earth's warming atmosphere.

The flooding in Maryland fits within the broader context of how human-caused climate change is altering our atmosphere, making these extreme events more commonplace in the future.

The Pokémon games on Nintendo Switch look like a dream come true

TwitterFacebook

In a surprise reveal, Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu! and Let's Go Eevee! were introduced to the world Tuesday night among other Pokémon news, and although details are sparse, this looks like the perfect tribute to the original games.

The Pokémon: Let's Go games send players back to Kanto, the region featured in the first Pokémon games, to explore, catch Pokémon, and battle against other trainers, all with a little companion to keep you company along the way. It appears to be a complete remaster of the original games from the '90s, plus some changes, and it seems exactly like the kind of thing that classic Pokémon fans needs. Read more...

LG has yet another phone for 2018, and it might be the best one yet

TwitterFacebook

It's not déjà vu — LG has yet another new phone, following the release of its flagship LG G7 ThinQ earlier this month and the LG V30s that came out in February

The LG V35 ThinQ is the new kid, merging the V30s design with features that we first saw on the G7.

However, there are three differences between the V35 and the G7. First, you don't get a traditional 6.1 inch QHD+ OLED screen, instead of an edge-to-edge one. Second, a larger 3,300mAh battery is on board. And third, there's more power on the inside thanks to 6GB of RAM.

NBA exec reportedly operated five secret Twitter accounts to criticize players and staff

TwitterFacebook

Anonymity on Twitter is sacred, and here's a delightful reason why it still rocks.

On Tuesday, The Ringer published an in-depth investigation into five outspoken, basketball-focused Twitter accounts, laying out the considerable evidence that Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo was actually the one secretly operating them all.

A deep-dive into the accounts' activity showed that Colangelo was allegedly using these anonymous accounts as a way to vent about his players and coaching staff, and defend (and even leak) his own strategy and choices.  Read more...
